Tyler, The Creator (Odd Future) - Bastard

I remember when I first heard the Slim Shady LP. I was 12 when it came out and had seen the "My Name Is" video on MTV. I asked my dad to drive me to go buy it and popped it into the car CD player. As soon as I heard: "the views and events expressed here are totally fucked" I knew it would be something different. Eminem proceeded to rap about doing all types of drugs, growing up poor, killing people, rape, suicide, and pretty much every other taboo subject you can think of. Needless to say my dad was not pleased when he heard it but it was fascinating. Who knew he would later become one of the most popular pop stars of the noughties.

Odd Future are a collective of teenage rappers and producers from L.A.. Clearly they thought the same as I did since in this release they rap about the same things but they take it a step further. Except most of them are bastards...

"Fuck a deal I just want my father's email so I can tell him how much I fucking hate him in detail".

While Em was angry you could tell he was just fucking with you in some songs. Here when Tyler, and his depressed voice, raps about cutting himself and being suicidal you almost believe it. It's half confessional, half shock, and insane. The beats are bleak and minimalist.

The best hip hop album of the year is from a teenage misfit from L.A. who raps about doing coke, hating his father, and anally raping the Virgin Mary. Then he tells us to play this in church. 'Nough said.

They also have a ton of albums on their website you can download for free so check it out: oddfuture.tumblr.com

Bruce Spring - Born to Fuck

Just like Cat said about Bowie's Low I say the same about this record, everyone should own it. Romanticism at it's finest. Let's get the fuck out of this place.

The Boss is one of the few musicians who can make a 4 minute song sound like an epic and there are a lot in this album. E.G. Thunder Road which contains some of the best lines in rock history.

P.S. I changed the title so they won't erase this even if they probably will. It already happened with Nebraska which is another Bruce masterpiece everyone should own.

P.S.S Fuck you if you think you're too cool to listen to Springs....ehhh.

Timeless: Arthur Verocai

Timeless: The Composer/Arranger Series is the name of a concert series that was created in homage to the composer/arrangers who have influenced hip-hop in the most literal and profound ways. Timeless was conceived by production house Mochilla in Los Angeles during February and March 2009 and included the performances of over 150 musicians in front of ecstatic sold out crowds. These three historic events were recorded and filmed in exacting detail with Mochilla's unmistakable style.

Arthur Verocai has composed and arranged for such giants as Jorge Ben, Gal Costa and Leny Andrade. But hiphop heads know him for his often sampled (see Ludacriss, MF Doom and Lil Brother) self titled solo album. The album came out at the height of the Brasilian dictatorship and was a commercial failure. His performance of this seminal 1972 record brought the capacity Luckman crowd to a stand still. According to Verocai, "he had never played the record, alive or dead!" His delight at the opportunity to play this music in its complete form can be seen in the DVD. He has subsequently been offered an opportunity to do the concert again in London. Stay tuned. The music for the DVD has been mixed by Verocai himself in Rio de Janeiro. History turned on its head and musical justice served.

Timeless: Miguel Atwood-Ferguson - Suite For Ma Dukes

Timeless was conceived by production house Mochilla in Los Angeles during February and March 2009 and included the performances of over 150 musicians in front of ecstatic sold out crowds. These three historic events were recorded and filmed in exacting detail with Mochilla's unmistakable style.

Timeless 2 celebrated the music of J.Dilla. Composed and arranged for a 60 piece Orchestra by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson feat. special guests Bilal, Dwele, Posdnuos, Talib Kweli and more. This premiere performance is still on the minds of many. Mixed and mastered by legendary Grammy award winning producer/mixer, Bob Power. The man behind hundreds of pop and jazz recordings for such artists as Erykah Badu, D'Angelo, De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest and more, he had also worked with Dilla while he was alive. Hiphop has never sounded or looked like this, welcome to a new era, a new scale and a new sound. Part of the proceeds of all Suite for Ma Dukes performances and recordings will go towards Maureen "Ma Dukes" Yancey and the heirs to the Dilla Estate.

On February 1st, Ethiopian musician and inventor of Ethio-jazz, Mulatu Astatke, a giant in African music blessed the sold-out Luckman Fine Arts Complex with an amazing show. He shared the stage with veterans of the Los Angeles jazz scene Bennie Maupin, Azar Lawrence and Phil Ranelin. The performance is beautiful - showcasing many classics as well as some new material too. He's currently touring Europe with the Heliocentrics and is still talking about the Timeless concert in Los Angeles.

Eric Dolphy - Out to Lunch

Absolutely one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century. Mingus recognized it, and some say that he pushed even further than Coltrane, I'd say "why bother debating?". This is another one of those who would have changed everything if he had not died young, but he did.

tach.dé - tach.dé

recorded in february 2009 and released july 2010, the tach.dé kids from Puerto Rico finally have an album. it contains music from their first phases as a group dating from 2006 till 2008 with soundscapes as interludes that were created in the following year. the bulk of the music sounds heavy with some sporadic riff action while other tunes are gentle and melancholic.

Arthur Verocai - Encore

after recording his debut self titled album which took a lot of patience and love, arthur was not pleased with the public reception of his album. he got heavily depressed and decided to call it quits and start making jingles for Brazilian commercials to make ends meet. after 30+ years he decided to make a comeback. he has only 2 albums in his catalog and he does not even have a wikipedia article. still truly unnoticed.

fuck yeah for comebacks.

Peter Broggs - Rastafari Liveth

this album is slowly becoming a personal favorite. the music is truly roots and culture, the recording is pristine with the rhythm section sounding FAT, the lyrics are socially conscious and the vibes are right. a gem of rasta recordings.

I am a international farmer, cultivating my good sensimillia.

Big Pooh - Sleepers

rapper big pooh, such a nice name for a rapper. the beats in this album are heavily banging and the mcs are dope. I strongly recommend this album if you are heavily into neck breaking beats. this is an old 2005 production but still a classic in its own right.

strongest man

Brian Eno - Small Craft On A Milk Sea

we all owe this one to the one and only Pituco and his great mustache. check out his bar, have a drink with the man and listen to some nice tunes while reading about his conversations with other fellow musicians.

gracias bigotín!

Lightning Bolt - Hypermagic Mountain

Finally I get around to some Lightning Bolt. This band shows how bad two guys can kick your ass, that's right, just bass and drums. They do it consistently on every album and Hypermagic Mountain is no exception. Bad ass riffs, and super-tight compression make this album sound huge, and volume is a factor which must be considered in order to listen to these guys properly. They turn it up, so you should too.

Kevin Ayers

I've been slightly obsessed with Ayers work for the past couple of years, not to mention the oeuvre of his Canterbury peers. His whimsical style never ceases to amaze and his body of work holds up strong after 15+ albums and 35+ years. A true magnate of music history. Here I've compiled the majority of his later albums, If you're new to this cat's music I suggest you start at the beggining with Joy Of A Toy, one of the first albums I posted here actually.

Qa`a - Chi`en

a couple of months ago we got an email from some dude saying "I see you got some this heat in this blog. check out this band, its got some this heat influence with some krautness". its a band from Barcelona and it definitely has some of those this heat soundscapes and a couple of grooves that remind me of can.

Lady June's Linguistic Leprosy

Just stumbled across this lil treasure. Lady June is a broodingly chipper spoken word poet with first-class company: Digital master Brian Eno and Canterbury legends Kevin Ayers from Soft Machine plus Pip Pyle from Gong. A very interesting listen to say the least.

a chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

Hella and Me

A few years ago, a good friend turned me on to a band called Hella, then a guitar/drum duo. As a bassist, I immediately felt the need to fill that gap (and test my skills, big time). So I recorded the whole album, except for D.Elkan and Brown Metal, and tried to get it done in as few takes as possible so i left some mistakes in that i liked. Over all i think the bass lines stay true to the songs and add a little something to the harmony and rhythm. Well, there's not much more I can say except that it was a pain in the ass and I really enjoyed it.

Thanks for being awesome.

Arthur Verocai - Arthur Verocai

there is only one word to describe this album: TIMELESS. yes i said it. TIMELESS. a 1972 album that was so ahead of its time that it was never given its moment to shine as one of the greatest albums of the 70s. not until he was rediscovered by music historians and was invited to LA in 2009 to do a concert of the full album. this man made a fusion between contemporary brazilian harmony, strings, electric pianos, acoustic guitars, electronic instruments, male and female singers to create a wide musical palette that is still regarded as one of the biggest achievements of the 20th century. he gave his heart and soul to create and record this album but nobody cared about it at the time of its release, so Arthur got depressed, he quit making symphonic arrangement and started making commercial jingles for tv to make money.

please donwload this album and witness the beauty of music.

Burning Spear - Social Living

a classic roots album filled with awesome harmonic explorations and praises to marcus garvey. this was one of the first reggae albums that i bought when i was in highschool and still it sounds like a timeless achievement in jah music. light one up and give thanks.

Shellac - Terraform

another one for the books. one of their greatest albums. classic bad-ass overdriven shellacness.

Luciano Perrone - Batucada Fantástica

1959 recording.

taken directly from toque-musicall:
