Timeless: Mulatu Astatke

Timeless: The Composer/Arranger Series is the name of a concert series that was created in homage to the composer/arrangers who have influenced hip-hop in the most literal and profound ways. Timeless was conceived by production house Mochilla in Los Angeles during February and March 2009 and included the performances of over 150 musicians in front of ecstatic sold out crowds. These three historic events were recorded and filmed in exacting detail with Mochilla's unmistakable style.

On February 1st, Ethiopian musician and inventor of Ethio-jazz, Mulatu Astatke, a giant in African music blessed the sold-out Luckman Fine Arts Complex with an amazing show. He shared the stage with veterans of the Los Angeles jazz scene Bennie Maupin, Azar Lawrence and Phil Ranelin. The performance is beautiful - showcasing many classics as well as some new material too. He's currently touring Europe with the Heliocentrics and is still talking about the Timeless concert in Los Angeles.

Various Artists - Afro-Rock Volume One

One of many great compilations of great fucking african funkified electric music with touches of psychedelia, soul, and cuban spice, featuring great cuts from Jingo, Super Mambo 69, Yahoos and Bokoor Band among others, and including Geraldo Pino's immortal "Heavy Heavy Heavy". Get fucked in afrodelic zones of debauchery.

Nomo - New Tones

Props to Abe for posting Nomo's wonderful "Ghost Rock". Here's their 2nd album.

Get it

NOMO - Ghost Rock

The latest album by this Michigan funk collective.

"The album sheds light on the way forward for a band that has been forging its own vital sound. This is not the Afrobeat of Fela, nor the revivalist Funk of a forgotten decade. This record owes as much to Can and Eno as it does Kuti, Francis Bebey, and Funkadelic. On Ghost Rock, NOMO arrives in a new place. There's no loss of steam as they incorporate new influences, instead NOMO breaks through with a matured and developed sound that is fully its own."

Fela Kuti with Ginger Baker - Live (1971)

Fela Kuti with his band, the Africa 70, doing their thing. Features extended tracks with grooves that mixed African and funk rhythms, punctuated by rudimentary lyrics. Ex Cream/Blind Faith drummer Ginger Baker's drum battles with Tony Allen make for some super tight and funky rhythm sections. This album is so funky it'll make your head spin. Add it to your collection!

Black Voices.

The rhythmic architect of Fela's Afrobeat, Tony Allen is one of the most groundbreaking percussionists in modern music. This effort shows him at the top of his game, mixing up the afrobeat with black studio tricknology. Afronauts on the move.
